Rebecca Read Medrano has served as the organization’s chief finance and administration officer since 1976. Medrano has also served as the principal development and marketing staff member, managing GALA’s $4.2M capital campaign and developing its strategic marketing plan. She has also coordinated the theatre’s performing arts series—ArteAméricA—a partnership with the Washington Performing Arts Society. A graduate of Smith College in Latin American Studies and Dance, Medrano has combined these disciplines through co-founding GALA and working for the Organization of American States for 22 years, most recently as managing editor of the bilingual Américas magazine. Prior to joining the OAS, Medrano was the administrative director and grant writer for Back Alley Theatre. Her contributions to the Hispanic performing arts and culture have been rewarded with the DC Mayor’s Award for Excellence in Service to the Arts (2006); Order of Queen Isabella II, conferred by the King of Span Juan Carlos I, for her outstanding promotion of Spanish culture in the United States (2006); and the Founders Award of the Cultural Alliance of Greater Washington (1998).
