ABOUT PASO NUEVO

Paso Nuevo is GALA’s unique after-school performance workshop for at-risk youth ages 15-20.  While incorporating aspects of acting technique (including voice and movement), the focus is on individual creative expression and performance in a safe collaborative environment.  Theater is used as a tool for enhancing self-esteem, developing language and communication skills, strengthening cultural identity, increasing academic and vocational skill sets, and promoting literacy in both English and Spanish.  The workshop runs in cycles that culminate in a public presentation.  Paso Nuevo is a part of GALA’s Creando en Comunidad (Creating in Community) program designed to introduce youth and families to the power of art, enhancing communication across generations and building a stronger neighborhood. See photos from last season's Paso Nuevo production at the bottom of this page.

Last season, GALA’s youth performance collective staged Neruda poetry alongside DC’s best spoken word, filmed a Public Service Announcement for Spanish-language TV, and created a new and visceral spectacle inspired by the Maya myth of Ixquic directed by Mattias Kraemer and Gabriel Garcia.
