This year’s edition celebrates the vibrancy of Central American cinema screening films from Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Panama—two of them in their U.S. premieres, with four filmmakers in attendance. Rounding up the selection is the acclaimed Mexican documentary Comala by Gian Cassini and the 1961 film Santo vs. Evil Brain, the Mexican film shot in Cuba which marked the cinematic debut of the famed masked hero.
Este año celebramos la vitalidad del cine centroamericano, proyectando películas de Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras y Panamá, dos de ellas en sus estrenos en los Estados Unidos, con la presencia de cuatro cineastas. Completan la selección el aclamado documental mexicano Comala de Gian Cassini y la película de 1961 Santo contra el cerebro del mal, la película mexicana rodada en Cuba que marcó el debut cinematográfico del afamado héroe enmascarado.

Additionally, enjoy the art exhibit Counterpoints (Contrapuntos) in our lobby! Curated by Pablo Zúñiga, former director of the Organization of American States' Art Museum of the Americas, and with support from Casa de la Cultural El Salvador, the exhibit features visual artists from the Washington, DC, area, and creates a setting where they share their vision on the topics and themes explored in this year's Film Festival. The participating artists include David Amoroso, Jorge Dunn, Muriel Hasbun, Sergio Olivos, Nicolas Shi, Wilfredo Valladares, and Marité Vidales. | ¡Adicionalmente, disfruta la exhibición Contrapuntos en nuestro vestíbulo! Hundreds of stories from nationals and foreigners come together in a public office where confusion reigns. It is a Kafkaesque place with doors that do not open, long lines, and cars adapted as offices. A limbo separates the film’s characters from their goals but unites them against a greater evil. Humor, drama, and the absurd mix in this poignant Costa Rican documentary feature, which had its world premiere at the Amsterdam Documentary Film Festival (IDFA). The debut feature by director Natalia Solórzano offers an engrossing take on bureaucracy and its exasperating ways, something that we can all relate to.
Cientos de historias de nacionales y extranjeros confluyen en una oficina pública en donde reina la confusión. Es un lugar kafkiano con puertas que no se abren, filas extensas y carros adaptados como oficinas. Un limbo separa a nuestros personajes de sus objetivos, pero los une contra un mal mayor. Humor, drama y el absurdo se mezclan en este incisivo largometraje documental costarricense, que tuvo su estreno mundial en el Festival de Cine Documental de Amsterdam (IDFA). La ópera prima de la directora Natalia Solórzano ofrece una fascinante visión sobre la burocracia y sus exasperantes formas, algo con lo que todos podemos identificarnos.

Set in Spain and starring the late celebrated Salvadoran actor Isabel Dada in her last cinematic performance, Before The Rain tells the story of two women, María and Esther, who are dealing with great losses. María is a Salvadoran immigrant who is unjustly fired from her job after being diagnosed with an illness and a hurtful breakup. Esther is an old lady who suffers from Alzheimer, causing her to be forgetful and lose cherished memories. They build up a special friendship that questions oblivion, leading María to reconstruct herself and her decision-making process regarding to whether return home to live with her son. The debut feature film by director Brenda Vanegas is a powerful story about memory and migration, anchored by some wonderful performances.
Ambientada en España y protagonizada por la célebre actriz salvadoreña Isabel Dada en su última actuación cinematográfica antes de su muerte, Antes la lluvia narra la historia de dos mujeres, María y Esther, que están lidiando con grandes pérdidas. María es una inmigrante salvadoreña que pierde su trabajo injustamente tras enfermar y, además, está terminando una relación dolorosa. Esther, una mujer mayor que padece Alzheimer, está perdiendo la memoria, y con ella los recuerdos más importantes. En medio de esto, construyen una amistad especial y de profundos cuestionamientos sobre el olvido, que resulta en reconstrucción completa de María y la toma de decisiones que la hacen plantearse su regreso a casa junto a su hijo. El primer largometraje de la directora Brenda Vanegas es una poderosa historia sobre la memoria y la migración, anclada en algunas actuaciones maravillosas.

In his acclaimed documentary feature debut, director Gian Cassini sets out to uncover the truths about his broken family. Comala becomes a detective story with Cassini picking up the pieces of his absent father’s life as failed hitman “El Jimmy,” murdered in a Mexican border town. Traversing the country in search of clues, the filmmaker exposes a network of men stuck within deeply rooted patterns of machismo and offers unprecedented access into the personal ramifications of Mexico’s war on drugs.
En su aclamada ópera prima, el director Gian Cassini se propone descubrir la verdad sobre su resquebrajada familia. Comala se convierte en una historia detectivesca en la que Cassini trata de poner juntas las piezas del rompecabezas sobre la ausencia de su padre “El Jimmy”, un asesino a sueldo venido a menos, quien fuera asesinado en un pueblo fronterizo mexicano. Recorriendo el país en busca de pistas, el cineasta descubre una red de hombres atrapados en patrones de machismo profundamente arraigados y ofrece un acceso sin precedentes a las ramificaciones personales de la guerra contra las drogas en México.

Shot in Cuba in 1958—shortly before Fidel Castro entered Havana and the filmmakers were forced to flee prematurely (with the unprocessed 35mm negative smuggled inside a coffin)—Santo vs. the Evil Brain marks the cinematic debut of El Santo (Rodolfo Guzmán Huerta), the most famous and iconic of all Mexican luchadores. The silver-masked hero foils the plot of a mad scientist, who aims to create a zombie army by zapping his innocent victims with electric shocks. Santo vs. The Evil Brain sparked a series of 52 films in which El Santo fights supernatural creatures, evil scientists, and various criminals.
Santo contra el cerebro del mal marca el debut cinematográfico de El santo (Rodolfo Guzmán Huerta), el más famoso e icónico luchador mexicano. Fue filmada en Cuba en 1958, poco antes que Fidel Castro entrara a La Habana y los cineastas fueran forzados a huir prematuramente con los rollos de la película sin procesar escondidos en un ataúd. Santo el enmascarado arruina el plan de un científico loco que trata crear un ejército de zombies dándole electroshocks a víctimas inocentes. Santo contra el cerebro del mal impulsó la creación de 52 películas en las que El santo lucha contra criaturas sobrenaturales, científicos malvados y otros criminales.

Hector decides to take back his life by way of force, driving the whole town into near chaos. Winner of the Best Film Award in the Mexican competition at the Guanajuato Film Festival, Roza is a potent story that marks the auspicious feature film by director Andrés Rodríguez.
Héctor regresa a su pueblo en el altiplano guatemalteco después de una larga y difícil migración a los Estados Unidos.
