2026-27 Season: "THE BEGINNING OF A NEW BEGINNING" (EL PRINCPIO DEL COMIENZO)

"This is our 2026-27 season. You'll notice that it has been crafted with great care and sensitivity. We wanted a season that reflects the anxieties swirling around us, a solid artistic, theatrical, and literary offering, but also a political and influential one, conceived from within our community during one of the most defining moments for the Spanish language in this country.

Because at GALA, language is identity, a form of rebellion, a battleground.

We'll journey from the power of art to save the world in GARBO to EVA LUNA confronting the fears of her age and era. From the legend of PANCHO VILLA and the value of memory in battle, to fortitude in the face of adversity in NO ONE WRITES TO THE COLONEL. We will retell THE ODYSSEY from a classroom in Takoma Park and return to the COLUMBIA HEIGHTS BOTIQUÍN/BAR, this time with mariachi music and stories rooted in our community, from the 1991 uprising in Mount Pleasant to the resistance of our neighbors in DC against the barbarity of ICE. And as if that weren't enough, we will present our first cycle of staged readings, NUEVA ERA, dedicated to unpublished and unproduced new plays by Latino playwrights in the US.

From García Márquez to Isabel Allende, from Zúñiga to Chabaud, Pedreira and new playwrights, today's authors walk hand in hand with the greats of Latin American literature. Yes, GALA's season looks different from others, perhaps because it is a singular and distinctive vision of Hispanic culture from the capital of the United States in a moment marked by authoritarian resurgence and the return of emperors.

A season that, in the face of despair, offers hope in the best of our culture, drawing themes from contemporary life and infusing them with the idea that, deep down, this is nothing more than the beginning of a new beginning.

Notarán que ha sido realizada con mucho cuidado y delicadeza porque queremos una temporada que sienta las ansiedades que circulan a nuestro alrededor. Creemos que se trata de una sólida propuesta artística, teatral y literaria, pero también política, influyente, concebida desde nuestra comunidad en uno de los momentos más determinantes del idioma español en este país.

Y es que en GALA el idioma es identidad, pero también una forma de rebelión, una trinchera de lucha.

Será un viaje desde la idea del arte para salvar al mundo en GARBO a EVA LUNA, enfrentando los temores de su edad y época. De la leyenda de PANCHO VILLA y el valor de la memoria en la batalla a la entereza frente a la adversidad de EL CORONEL NO TIENE QUIEN LE ESCRIBA. Contaremos LA ODISEA, como sea, desde un salón de clases en Takoma Park para terminar con el regreso del Botiquín de Columbia Heights, esta vez con música ranchera mezclada con historias de nuestra comunidad, desde la revuelta de 1991 en Mount Pleasant hasta la resistencia de nuestros vecinos a la barbarie de ICE. Y como si fuera poco, estrenaremos NUEVA ERA, nuestro programa anual de lecturas dramatizadas dedicadas a obras sin estrenar de autor Latino en los Estados Unidos.

De García Márquez a Isabel Allende; de Zúñiga, Chabaud, y Pedreira a los nuevos escritores, aquí el autor de hoy va de la mano de los grandes de la literatura latinoamericana. Sí, esta temporada de GALA es distinta a la de los demás porque se trata de una aproximación única y especial a lo hispano desde la capital de los Estados Unidos en medio del auge autoritario y el regreso de los emperadores.  

Una temporada que frente a la desesperación ofrece esperanza con lo mejor de nuestra cultura, vinculando temas de hoy con la idea de que, en el fondo, esto no es más que el inicio de un nuevo comienzo.
