The festival is curated by Carlos Gutiérrez, Co-founder and Executive Director of Cinema Tropical in New York, who will also moderate the Q&As on Friday, December 3 and Saturday, December 4.

Middle-aged Magdalena (Mercedes Hernández) has lost contact with her son after he took off with a friend from their town of Guanajuato to cross the border into the U.S., hopeful to find work. Desperate to find out what happened to him—and to know whether or not he’s even alive—she embarks on an ever-expanding and increasingly dangerous journey to discover the truth. At the same time, a young man named Miguel (David Illescas) has returned to Mexico after being deported from the U.S., and eventually his path converges with Magdalena’s. From this simple but urgent premise, director Fernanda Valadez has crafted a lyrical, suspenseful slow burn, equally constructed of moments of beauty and horror, and which leads to a startling, shattering conclusion.
Winner of the Gotham Award for Best International Film and the Audience Award and Best Screenplay prize at the Sundance Film Festival.
Ya en su madurez, Magdalena (Mercedes Hernández) no ha sabido de su hijo desde que salió de Guanajuato con un amigo para cruzar la frontera con los Estados Unidos en busca de empleo. Decidida a descubrir si su hijo está vivo o qué le pasó, Magdalena inicia una peligrosa búsqueda para saber la verdad. Al mismo tiempo, un joven llamado Miguel (David Illescas) regresa a México, luego de ser deportado de los Estados Unidos, y los caminos de ambos se unen. A partir de este hecho, la directora Fernanda Valadez crea una trama llena de suspenso y lirismo, con momentos de belleza y horror, que conlleva a un perturbador final.

The death of patriarch Alfredo sends his heirs into a downward spiral. With the pending sale of their beach house, a repository of childhood memories, three siblings’ long-simmering resentments are brought to a full boil. Alternating between moments of laugh-out-loud absurdity and stirring beauty, Alelí is a knowing black comedy about a dysfunctional family that seems willing to set everything on fire.
The film has played at numerous international film festivals including Miami, Chicago, and Rio de Janeiro.
La muerte del patriarca Alfredo desata una batalla entre sus herederos. La inminente venta de la casa de la playa, que guarda innumerables recuerdos de sus infancias, reanima el resentimiento de tres hermanos. Con momentos de carcajadas absurdas y otros de turbulenta belleza, Alelí es una comedia de humor negro sobre una familia disfuncional que parece estar a punto de tirar todo al fuego.

Felipe--an undocumented Mexican immigrant--has reached a crossroad. After living 16 years in Brooklyn, working three-paying jobs, and sending the bulk of his earnings to his wife and children in Mexico, he's decided to return home to the family he hasn't seen in almost two decades. But when he informs them of his plans, he discovers that they've squandered the money, are deeply in debt and don’t want him to return. They need him to stay in the U.S. and continue to earn. Shot over two years in the heart of Brooklyn’s immigrant community, I’m Leaving Now is a searing and intimate portrait of one undocumented worker on the margins. The film brings a warm humanity to one of the most pressing political issues of our time, without sentimentalizing or trivializing its subject. In allowing the rhythms, emotions, and sounds of Felipe’s day-to-day life to drive the story, filmmakers Lindsey Cordero and Armando Croda open an impressionistic, cinematic window onto a life that otherwise would remain unseen.
Felipe, un inmigrante mexicano indocumentado que ha vivido 16 años en Brooklyn con tres trabajos y enviando dinero a su familia en México, decide regresar a su país a verla. Cuando Felipe le cuenta sus planes a la familia, descubre que han despilfarrado el dinero, tienen muchas deudas y no quieren que vuelva. Su esposa e hijos necesitan que Felipe se quede en los Estados Unidos para que les mande más dinero. Filmada durante más de dos años en el corazón de la comunidad inmigrante en Brooklyn, Ya me voy es un doloroso e íntimo retrato de la vida de un inmigrante marginado. Esta película humaniza uno de los asuntos políticos más álgidos de nuestra época, sin caer en sentimentalismos o en la trivialización del tema. Dejando que los ritmos, emociones y sonidos de la vida diaria de Felipe conduzcan la historia, los cineastas Lindsey Cordero y Armando Croda abren una ventana impresionista a una vida que, de otro modo, hubiera pasado desapercibida.

Chilean-born performer and writer Iván Monalisa fully embraces his / her dual selves: scrappy, masculine Iván as well as diva, transvestite sex-worker Monalisa. A reunion with filmmaker Nicole Costa, Iván’s former college classmate, provides the opportunity for a journey through this undocumented transgender immigrant’s daily life of sex, drugs, and poetry—as well as a quest for US legalization. Pragmatic and humorous, Iván Monalisa navigates the gritty underbelly of New York City with charisma and charm. Costa intersperses recent scenes of Monalisa’s attempts to get a visa and their first successes as a writer with old VHS footage, snippets of telephone conversations, and extracts from their work: beautiful, raw pieces about life and survival in New York.
El (la) artista y escritor(a) chileno(a) Iván Monalisa se adueña de sus dos “yo”: el desorganizado y masculino Iván, y la diva trasvesti y trabajadora sexual Monalisa. Una reunión con la cineasta y antigua compañera de estudios, Nicola Costa, se convierte en la oportunidad perfecta para contar la historia de este(a) inmigrante transgénero indocumentado(a) y su día a día, que transcurre entre sexo, drogas, poesía e intentos por legalizar su estatus migratorio en los Estados Unidos. Desde una perspectiva pragmática y humorística, Iván Monalisa nos adentra en el submundo de la ciudad de Nueva York con carisma y encanto. Costa intercala escenas actuales de Monalisa tratando de obtener una visa, y sus primeros éxitos como escritor(a), viejas imágenes de VHS, pedazos de conversaciones telefónicas y extractos de su trabajo que incluyen bellas piezas no terminadas sobre la vida y la sobrevivencia en Nueva York.

7 pm - EL CANTO DE LAS MARIPOSAS / THE SONG OF THE BUTTERFLIES – Documentary/Documental

Winner of the Best Iberoamerican Film award at the Guadalajara International Film Festival in 2020, The Song of the Butterflies spotlights indigenous histories of storytelling and processes of collective memory, trauma, and healing in the Peruvian Amazon. A nuanced depiction of contemporary indigenous life, Frigola’s debut documentary follows Rember Yahuarcani, an Indigenous painter from the White Heron clan of the Uitoto Nation in Peru. Rember left home to pursue a successful career in Lima, but when he finds himself in a creative rut, he returns home to his Amazonian community of Pebas to visit his father, a painter, and his mother, a sculptor. Through the stories and dreams of his parents and his grandmother, he confronts the horrors his community faced as a result of the rubber boom in Peru, immersing himself in the past so that he can rediscover his own creativity.
Ganador del premio a Mejor Filme Iberoamericano en el Festival Internacional de Cine de Guadalajara en el 2020, el documental El canto de las mariposas presenta las historias y procesos de memoria colectiva, traumas y sanación mental de pueblos indígenas peruanos de la Amazonia. Este primer documental de Frigola es una sutil semblanza de la vida indígena actual y se centra en Rember Yahuarcani, un pintor de la tribu Garza Blanca de la nación Uitoto en el Perú. Rember abandona su hogar para convertirse en un conocido pintor en Lima. En medio de un bloqueo creativo regresa a la comunidad de Pebas, en el Amazonas, para visitar a su padre, también pintor, y a su madre, una escultora. A través de las historias y sueños de sus padres y abuela, Rember enfrenta los horrores que vivieron debido al auge de la goma en Perú, sumergiéndose en el pasado para redescubrir su propia creatividad.
