OCA

Karla Badillo, Mexico/Argentina, 2025, 109 min. - DRAMA

Q&A with director Karla Badillo

Post-screening reception courtesy of the Embassies of Mexico and Argentina (TBC)

Winner of the Silver Hugo Award in the New Directors Competition at the Chicago International Film Festival, Oca is the atmospheric and mystical debut feature by Karla Badillo, telling the story of Rafaela, a young nun from a dwindling congregation who embarks on a pilgrimage after the arrival of a new archbishop. Along the way, she encounters travelers from diverse walks of life, and her journey becomes a lyrical and often poignant meditation on faith, doubt, and resilience in a world shaped by both spiritual and material forces. Featuring a stellar ensemble cast of professional actors—including Natalia Solián (Huesera: The Bone Woman), Cecilia Suárez (The House of Flowers), and Raúl Briones (La cocina)—alongside non-professional performers, the film offers a quietly critical lens on devotion and institutional life, reimagining the spiritual cinema of Luis Buñuel through a contemporary, distinctly female perspective and tracing the winding path between belief, destiny, and self-discovery.

A HEART AS WILLING / LA CORAZONADA

Diego Soto, Chile, 2025, 78 min. - COMEDY

Post-screening reception courtesy of the Embassy of Chile (TBC)

Nieves runs a modest inn with her son in the Chilean countryside, leading a quiet life shaped by routine and deferred dreams. When a wandering motorcyclist arrives and falls for her, the prospect of a late-blooming romance offers an unexpected glimpse of happiness – yet their relationship seems destined to falter. Everything changes with the arrival of a filmmaker who casts them in her adaptation of Shakespeare’s “The Tempest”, drawing them into the creative process and gradually blurring the boundaries between performance and reality. As fiction begins to reshape their everyday lives, new emotional possibilities emerge in this playful and deeply human meditation on love, aging, cinema, and the mysterious ways stories transform those who inhabit them.

"A luminous comedy." —El Agente Cine

"Dazzles in its simplicity… A distinctive and powerful charm grounded in reality."

ABRIL

Hernán Jiménez, Costa Rica, 2026, 105 min. - DRAMEDY

Post-screening reception courtesy of the Embassy of Costa Rica (TBC)

Recently divorced and stretched thin, Abril has built her life around raising her teenage daughter, Valentina. But when Valentina announces that she wants to move in with her father, Abril suddenly finds herself facing a terrifying question: Who is she when she’s no longer taking care of someone else? As she struggles to come to terms with her daughter’s growing independence, an unexpected romance with Gabriel, a charming bartender, opens the door to a life beyond motherhood—and to the messy, exhilarating possibility of starting over. Set against the streets of San José and featuring a wonderful ensemble cast—including newcomer Maricarmen Merino, the director himself, and Heated Rivalry star François Arnaud in his first Spanish-language role—Hernán Jiménez’s warm and sharply funny dramedy is a tender portrait of motherhood, identity, letting go, and rediscovering yourself when life refuses to go according to plan.

THE PANTHER WOMAN / LAS MUJERES PANTERAS

René Cardona, Mexico, 1967, 88 min. - ACTION

René Cardona’s deliriously entertaining and action-packed cult classic throws horror, comedy, noirish atmosphere, and lucha libre into the ring for an unclassifiable celebration of 1960s Mexican B-movie imagination at its wildest. At the center are the Panther Women, who unleash a campaign of blood sacrifice and terror in hopes of resurrecting their cult’s ancient leader. Their diabolical scheme soon meets its match in Golden Rubí and Loreta Venus, two fearless luchadoras who take the fight beyond the ring in a whirlwind of brawls, chases, masked heroes, and supernatural mayhem. Featuring legendary dancer and actress Yolanda Montes, better known as Tongolele, alongside beloved comedian Manuel “Loco” Valdés, the film is a gloriously eccentric showcase of Mexican popular cinema at its most exuberant.
